This entry into the Leicester Open Exhibition, 2015, shows the ‘lovely’ Market Tavern, as seen from my office window. It is a piece that combines two of my favourite subjects: old buildings and people. All the characters depicted here are fictional, but based very closely on the comings and goings I see on a daily basis. There’s the old lady who visits the tavern every day from 10am until early evening, when she rides home on her Belfast taxi. And the ‘ciggie man’, who the illustration is named after, who wanders in like some character from the old St. Trinian’s films, with his holdall full of tobacco!
